Professionals and members are subject to professional taxes imposed by the State Government. Within 30 days after their creation, enterprises in Maharashtra are required to register for professional taxes. Notably, directors and business partners are also subject to professional tax, in addition to employees. But do you know how to apply for a professional tax number in Maharashtra? I have shared the process below.

Steps to Apply for Professional Tax Number in Maharashtra

Self-employed individuals or proprietors must enrol (PTEC), while employers with staff earning above Rs 7,500/month must register for PTRC to deduct and remit tax on behalf of employees. Here is the process.

  1. Visit the Maharashtra Department of Goods and Services Tax portal.

  2. Navigate to Other Acts Registration.

  3. Select New Registration under Various Acts, choose “New Dealer,” and validate your PAN or TAN.

  4. You will receive a temporary profile via email and an OTP to your mobile. Use these credentials to log in under “VAT & allied acts.”

  5. Under “Registration,” select the Act and fill out the online Form I/II, providing personal or business details, addresses, bank account, and upload supporting documents.

  6. Upon submission, you’ll receive an acknowledgement and an Application Reference Number.

The tax department validates your details, such as PAN with NSDL, Aadhaar with UIDAI, and bill utility, after which a unique Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is issued.
