Applying to become a Notary Public is now a fully online process managed by the Department of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Law & Justice. To know how to apply for notary public online you must use the official government Notary Online Application Portal to submit your application for appointment as a Central Notary Public. 

What is the Process of Applying for Notary Public Online?

  1. Only eligible legal practitioners/advocates can apply. Make sure you meet the criteria defined under the Notaries Act and Rules before starting your application.

  2. Go to the Notary Cell’s official online portal on the Department of Legal Affairs website (

    https://legalaffairs.gov.in/notary-cell

    ). Here you will find the online application form and instructions.

  3. Fill out the online application form with accurate details personal information, legal qualifications, bar enrolment details and other requested fields. Ensure all information is correct before submission.

  4. Attach digital copies of your identity proof, bar enrolment certificate, educational records and any supporting documents required. There is no need to send hard copies or forward documents through a district court.

  5. Pay any applicable government fees through the portal’s online payment system. This includes statutory charges necessary for processing applications.

  6. Submit the application online and generate the acknowledgement. Print and keep this acknowledgement for your records as proof of submission.

  7. After submission, eligible candidates will receive individual intimation via email or post for an interview by the competent authority. You must attend the scheduled interview to proceed further.

If selected post-interview, you will be appointed as a Notary Public and issued a certificate of practice to act in the designated state/union territory.
