Bank account holders can send and receive money from their smartphones utilising UPI using a single identifier, or Virtual Payment Address (VPA) through the use of the registered Indian or foreign mobile number from specific regions, such as Australia, Canada, France, etc. But do you know how to activate UPI for NRI account? You can do that by linking your international mobile number with your NRE account.
Steps to Activate UPI for NRI Account
NRIs can follow the below process to send money or make payments to Indian merchants:
Link your international mobile number (from supported countries) with your NRE or NRO account. Some banks may require an Indian number for UPI registration.
Install a UPI-enabled app like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or BHIM.
Open the UPI app and select your bank. Enter your registered international number and verify it via OTP. Link your NRE/NRO account and set up a UPI PIN.
Once registered, you can send and receive money, pay bills, and transact within India. However, fund transfers outside India are restricted.
UPI for NRIs is available in selected countries (e.g., USA, UK, UAE, Singapore). Only NRE/NRO accounts linked with international numbers are eligible. Ensure your bank and UPI app support NRI UPI transactions.
