Curious about how solar rooftop works?

Electric current flows from your solar roof's photovoltaic (PV) tiles when sunlight strikes them and is absorbed by solar cells. Your solar inverter receives this direct current (DC) energy and transforms it into alternating current (AC) energy, which powers your house.

How Do Solar Roof Tiles Work?

  • Solar rooftop panels use solar energy absorption and conversion into electricity through the use of photovoltaic cells within the panels. These solar cells undergo a chemical reaction in response to sunlight, releasing electrons and creating an electric current.

  • Layers of semiconductor materials based on doped silicon crystals serve as the main component of these photovoltaic cells in a solar rooftop system. The bottom layer of the cell generates a positive charge by bonding with silicon and containing a lot of boron. However, the phosphorus-doped top layer is what generates the negative charge.

  • The surface motion between these two layers, known as the P-N junction, generates an electric field.

  • Photons dislodge electrons from both levels when the cells are exposed to sunlight. When the top and bottom layers have opposite charges, electrons begin to flow. The P-N junction controls the path of the electrons as they proceed to an external circuit where electricity is transported for use.

I hope this helps you understand how rooftop solar system works.
