Recently, I planned to refresh my kitchen cabinets with a new coat of paint. The first question I faced was how much paint do I need for kitchen cabinets. I went to the painting shop and asked the shopkeeper. He said one gallon of paint can cover up to 400 square feet. This coverage varies slightly depending on the type of paint used and the surface texture.

How Much Paint Needed for Kitchen Cabinets?

A tiny kitchen with up to 15 cabinets might need less than a gallon. However, a medium-sized kitchen with up to 30 cabinets could need a gallon of paint. Here’s the calculation to know the amount of paint required for kitchen cabinets.

  1. First, determine the area of each component by measuring the height and width of each drawer front and cabinet door.

  2. For every surface, multiply the height by the width.

  3. Now, find your total surface area by adding up these areas.

  4. Since most paints require two coats to be evenly covered, double your total area: Total Area for Painting = Total Square Feet x 2.

  5.  Finally, to know the exact paint quantity, use this formula:

Gallons Needed = Total Area for Paint / Coverage Per Gallon

For my 100 sq ft cabinet, the shopkeeper said I need only 1 gallon of paint. To determine how much paint is needed for kitchen cabinets, divide the entire cabinet surface area by the paint's coverage per gallon, then multiply the result by the number of coats required.

Hi. I hired a professional painter for Diwali last year to paint my kitchen cabinets in a trendy look. I asked the painter how much paint do I need for kitchen cabinets before heading to the paint store to buy cans. He told me that a gallon of paint covers about 350 to 400 square feet, so that should be enough. Furthermore, he mentioned that it might change depending on a few factors that I've included below for your reference.

How Much Paint is Needed for Kitchen Cabinets?

The painter I hired from NoBroker said that the size and number of cabinets you have, along with the paint type you select, will determine the required amount of paint. I also saw the steps he performed to find out how much paint to paint kitchen cabinets is needed. He also informed me of the following calculation steps:

  • He said to measure each cabinet's height, breadth, and depth to determine its surface area.

  • To determine the exact number of gallons you'll need, divide the entire square footage by 350 or 400 square feet.

Additionally, he said that certain finishes can need additional paint coats, so it's a good idea to buy a bit of extra paint. I hope you get an idea of how much paint is needed to paint kitchen cabinets.
