Under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act, individuals in India can claim deductions for medical-related expenses under several key heads. It encourages both health insurance coverage and prudent expenditure on preventive care and treatment. Coming to your question, how much medical expenses can I claim on my taxes? It is usually Rs 25,000 for non-senior citizens.

How much Medical can I Claim on My Taxes?

  • Health insurance premiums (self, spouse, children, parents): For a non-senior citizen taxpayer (under 60), you can claim up to Rs 25,000 per year for premiums paid for yourself, spouse, and dependent children.

  • If either the taxpayer or spouse is a senior citizen (60+), that limit increases to Rs 50,000.

  • Separately, for parents' health insurance, you can claim up to Rs 25,000, or Rs 50,000 if they are senior citizens.

  • In combined situations, the total deduction can reach Rs 75,000 (Rs 25k self + Rs 50k parents) or even Rs 100,000 if both taxpayer/spouse and parents are senior citizens.

  • Section 80DDB covers treatment of specified critical illnesses (like cancer, AIDS, Parkinson’s) up to Rs 40,000 for under-60s and up to Rs 1,00,000 for senior citizens.

  • Section 80DD allows Rs 75,000 deduction (Rs 1,25,000 for severe disabilities) for treatment or maintenance of disabled dependents.
