Hey,
India’s rapid economic growth in recent years has fueled the real estate boom transforming millions of hectares of arable land into plots for glass-and-steel high-rises. Such land is described as being degraded. Land degradation has been defined as the permanent or temporary lowering of a land’s productive capacity. In simple words, it becomes very difficult to grow crops on such land, which can even lead to desertification if it is not stopped. Let me tell you how much degraded land is present in India.
How Much Land is Degraded in India at PresentAs per government data, about 97 million hectares or 30% of the land in India is degraded. I want to tell you that this area is about the size of northern Europe. Land degradation led to about a 2.5% loss of economic output of the country between 2014 and 2015.
A major cause of land degradation is human activity, such as deforestation, agricultural and livestock production, construction activity, etc. Our government is preparing to restore 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030. However, the UN said that our country needs to restore a minimum of 30 million hectares in the next ten years to reverse land degradation by 2030. Let’s see what happens!
I hope you like my answer on how much degraded land is present in India.
