Hi Raja. If you are wondering how many coats of paint on exterior walls are needed, the answer is 2 to 3. In general, 2 coats do the job, but in some painting jobs, 3 coats are used to achieve a uniform, long-lasting finish. See, the first coat of paint is like the base and just sets the surface and covers a bit of imperfections.

When you get to the second coat, you will get proper coverage as the paint now works on providing a smooth and even finish to the walls.

Now, there are cases like I said where you would need as high as 3 coats as well. This happens when you are switching from a dark colour to a lighter one or when using low opacity paints that don’t cover the previous paint and imperfections in just 2 coats. One more reason, which you should take care of, is the wall condition. Poor wall condition, with a lot of cracks and holes, and unevenness, will take up more coats.

Recently, I hired a painter to do the exterior painting of my house as we have a wedding at home next month. At that time, I asked him how many coats of paint on exterior walls are usually required. He explained that typically two coats are applied. The first coat works as a base, and the second coat gives proper coverage, making the finish uniform, long-lasting, and professional.

How Many Coats of Paint on the Exterior Wall?

My painter explained it to me in a very simple way:

  1. He said that in some cases, just one coat of paint is enough. For example, if the wall is already in good condition without peeling or cracks, and if I use good-quality paint with only a slight colour change, then a single coat can refresh the look and even work as a maintenance coat.

  2. But when the wall is damaged or weathered, or if I want to make a big colour change, like shifting from dark to light, then two coats are better. He also said that in areas with tough weather or where the wall gets more wear and tear, two coats will last longer and give stronger protection.

Hope this helps you understand how many coats are needed for exterior painting .
