I hired a painter to paint my entire home, and when he was about to paint the cabinets, I asked how many coats of paint for cabinets. He said two to three coats would be applied. He said that for spray painting kitchen cabinets, he will start with a primer so the paint sticks well. Then he will spray on two coats of paint, letting each one dry before adding the next. After explaining this, he began painting, and I observed the painting process, which I added below.
How Many Coats of Paint on Cabinets?
When the painter started, he used good-quality paint, saying it would stick better and last longer. Even then, he put on at least two coats to make sure the finish looked smooth and even. Here are the steps to paint the cabinets based on what I observed.
Before starting, he checked the cabinets. If the old paint looked fine, he painted over it. But if it was peeling, he scraped it and started from scratch.
He put on one coat of primer.
Once that dried, he sprayed on the first coat of paint, let it dry, then did a second coat. Altogether, including the primer, he used two or three coats.
He mentioned that adding too many coats is not good, but it can cause the paint not to stick properly. So, he was careful not to overcoat the cabinets.
This is how he painted my cabinets.
