Summary
On average, the exterior house paint lasts 5 to 10 years without a new coat of paint. Using high-quality paints along with proper preparation can extend their lifespan to 10 to 15 years. But, the actual timing varies based on the material it’s made from, original paint quality, climate, surface preparation, and the exterior wall colour.

Usually, on average, the exterior house paint lasts 5 to 10 years without a new coat of paint. But how long does exterior house paint last depends on various factors, including the material it’s made from. Homes can be made from several different substances, such as wood, metal, stucco, and brick. I have shared how well the paint performs on each material.

How Long should Exterior House Paint Last?

It completely depends on the original paint quality, where your property is located, the climate, whether proper priming and surface cleaning are done or not, and the exterior wall colour. Using high-quality paints along with proper preparation can extend their lifespan to 10 to 15 years.

  • Brick Wall

A house with a brick wall needs a fresh coat of paint every three to five years.

  • Stucco Wall

Stucco homes can resist harsh weather without needing paint easily. However, professionals suggest that a stucco exterior house should be painted every five to ten years. If neglected, old stucco walls may develop cracks that jeopardise the house's structural integrity.

  • Wood Siding

Typically, wood siding needs to be repainted every three to seven years.

  • Metal Siding

Metal sidings have an average lifespan of 40 to 70 years with adequate care and proper maintenance. Steel and aluminium are two common materials for metal siding. Apart from this, every ten years, you should paint the exterior of your metal siding to give it a new look.

Signs That a Home’s Exterior Needs a Fresh Coat

  • Chipping: When the paint on exterior walls begins to chip or peel, that means it’s time to repaint.

  • Cracked Caulk: A house's exterior walls immediately require a fresh coat of paint if there are cracks in the caulk between siding pieces.

  • Fading Colors: If the house exterior wall paint appears washed out or bland, then you must get it repainted.

Hope this helps.
