Hey there. In general, there is no limit as to how long can property taxes go unpaid. But yes, penalties start to be applied on non-payment of the property taxes after a set duration. The time duration during which no action is taken on non-payment of the property tax differs from one location to another. Here in Bangalore, rules have been made stricter this year to charge penalties upon failure to pay property taxes for two consecutive years.
Property Tax Payment Rules in Bangalore
As per the new regulations set by the BBMP, property tax dues need to be cleared by March 31, or penalties will be imposed from April 1st.
On non-payment of property taxes for two consecutive years, the owner will be imposed with a 100 percent penalty (equal to the unpaid amount) along with an annual interest of 9 percent.
The rule also applies retroactively to defaulters who haven’t cleared dues as of April last year.
