The carpenter calculates the overall area of the front-facing surface to get the square footage (sq ft) of a wardrobe. Doors, drawers, and the surrounding framework are all measured from the front area. For the front area calculations, they measure:
- Total height (ft)
: Measure the height of the wardrobe (not including the loft) from the floor to the top. Suppose it is 8 feet.
- Total width (ft)
: Measure the wardrobe's width from left to right. Suppose it is 6 feet.
Then the total front-facing surface area will be 8 feet x 6 feet = 48 sq ft.
- Total height (ft)
Now, they measure the depth. For this, they include side panels and standard wardrobe depth (usually around 2 feet). So, for two side panels, it will be 8 x 2 x 2 sides = 32 sq ft.
Also, they consider the area of the top panel, the bottom panel, and the shelves.
Top panel will be 6 × 2 = 12 sq ft
Bottom panel will be 6 × 2 = 12 sq ft
Internal shelves are added after being measured separately.
Measurements of shutter area are made independently. Assuming three 8 by 2 ft shutters, their combined area would be 8 x 2 × 3 = 48 sq ft.
