I went to Palampur with my friends last year. It is a very beautiful hill station in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. Around 450 families live in Palampur and farming is the main activity that takes place in this village. While I was there, I wondered if there is not much land but plenty of farmer families, what was land distribution like. To quench my thirst for this information, I started asking around and gathered some useful inputs. In this answer, I will explain how is land distributed between the farmers of Palampur.

of the population that stays in Palampur village, is dependent on farming. As we all know that land is the most essential requirement for farming, but residents of this village do not have sufficient land for cultivation.
There is an unequal land distribution in Palampur among the people. Sadly, 1/3
rd
of 450 families staying in Palampur don’t own land. 240 families out of the remaining families that have land, cultivate on parcels of land that are less than two hectares in size. Farmer families that cultivate on these small parcels of land don’t earn enough income or money.
The remaining families belonging to large or medium farmers cultivate more than two hectares of land. Some of these farmers even own over ten hectares of land. The land parcels that are extremely large in size cover more than 50% of the area.

The govt. has fixed wages of Rs. 60 per day for the farm laborers, but since the competition among the agricultural laborers for work is very high in Palampur, thus only Rs. 35-40 per day are paid to these farm laborers.
I know the situation is sad there but I hope it gets better with time.
