When my dad asked me to help decorate our new home, I didn't realise the interior design would affect our daily lives. The way a room is arranged could affect mood and behaviour. So, I called in some professionals to guide us. As I watched them at work, I understood how can interior design affect human behavior in ways I hadn’t considered before.

How Does Interior Design Affect Us?

It turns out that the design elements in our home play a huge role in shaping our emotions and actions. From lighting to color, each choice influences how we feel and behave in the space. Here’s what I learned during the process:

Lighting

The lighting in a room can completely change its atmosphere. Bright lighting can make you feel more alert, even a bit energised. But dim lighting, like what the designers suggested for our living room, created a cosy and relaxed environment.

I was amazed to learn that natural light is particularly uplifting, boosting serotonin levels and making us feel happier. The designers suggested larger windows to let in more daylight, and it really brightened up the space.

Colors

The color of a room has a big effect on mood. The designers used soft beige tones in the bedrooms, which created a peaceful vibe. They also added touches of yellow in the kitchen, bringing warmth and cheerfulness.

I didn’t know until then that certain colors could calm you down, while others could make you feel energised or even anxious. It was fascinating to see how colours evoke different emotions.

Reflective Fixtures

Mirrors were strategically placed in various rooms, making everything look brighter and more spacious. I noticed how the light bounced off these surfaces, creating an open and positive environment.

Furniture or Decor Shapes

The shapes of furniture and decor pieces also have a subtle impact. The rounded edges of the coffee table and sofas created a softer, more inviting feel, while the sharp edges of the dining table brought in an element of energy. It was all about finding the right balance.

It’s about creating the right vibe for your life. Each element you add to your home, from lighting to colours and shapes, influences how you feel.

If you're looking to change the atmosphere in your home, it might be worth considering how can interior design affect human behavior.
