Hey,

Did you know there are different categories of a wall? There are two types of walls, they are framed walls and solid walls. The construction processes for both are slightly different. The strength of the wall largely depends on the quality of the material.

How a wall is built?

Framed Wall :

The framed wall transfers the structural load of the building to the foundation via columns, studs, or posts. In such a wall there is a cavity between the interior layer and the exterior layer.

The interior layer is made from block work and the exterior layer is made of another material (brickwork, blockwork, or stone).

Solid Wall :

Solid walls are made from one solid material, be it masonry, concrete, brick, timber, rammed earth, straw bales, etc. Since these walls are also known as stud walls. Partition walls can be constructed from timber, steel, or aluminium frames.

How is a wall is built?

From what I've seen, a brick wall is built in steps.

  • An evenly thick layer of cement is laid down on the surface

  • Then, bricks are placed side by side on top of the cement

  • The grout and edges of the bricks are filled with cement to ensure there is no vacant space.

  • Another layer of cement is put on top of the bricks

  • Followed by a row of bricks. Everything is tightly placed

Many times, the wall is glazed or covered with the following material.
  • Glazing

  • Aluminium

  • Stainless steel

  • Zinc

  • Composites

  • Timber

  • Tensile fabric coverings

  • Brick slips

  • Tile hanging

  • Shakes and shingles

  • uPVC

I hope now you know how a wall is built.
