Being a doctor, I often get this question from my patients, usually during the allergy season: Does AC circulate air from outside? The answer is usually No! Fresh air usually does not enter through air conditioners. ACs are usually not designed in that way. In reality, your air conditioner draws air into the unit from your room and then cools it down using the refrigerant coil and then distributes it. However, there is a chance of AC circulating air from outside in the fan mode.
Does Air Conditioner Circulate Air from Outside?
The warm air in your room is drawn in by a split or window air conditioner, which is used by the refrigerant coils to cool it before forcing it out again. Unless the AC has a ventilation feature, which is uncommon in conventional versions, it does not draw in fresh outdoor air.
Nonetheless, if you operate the AC on fan mode, then it can draw in some fresh air. When the AC is in this mode, outside air will be drawn inside your house and circulated through its cooling coils. In addition to ensuring that fresh oxygen circulates throughout your rooms, this will help to remove any stale air.
