During our house re-painting, especially on the texture walls, I learnt from the painter that sanding textured walls before painting depends on the texture and finish you want. If the texture is rough or uneven, light sanding will help smooth high spots and improve paint adhesion. For heavily textured walls, it\'s best not to sand them, as it can be messy. This should have provided you with some idea on do you sand textured walls before painting or not.

What is the Process of Sanding Textured Walls Before Painting?

To paint our textured walls, here are the steps the professionals followed:

  1. The painters started by cleaning the textured wall with a dry cloth to remove dust and loose debris, making sure the surface was clear.

  2. They then used a drywall sander with fine-grit sandpaper to gently smooth out rough spots while keeping most of the texture intact, being careful not to over-sand.

  3. After sanding, they wiped the wall again with a damp cloth to remove any remaining dust, then applied a primer to seal the surface and help the paint stick evenly for a smooth, long-lasting finish.

If possible, avoid sanding textured walls, but if you really want to do it, make sure you hire professionals to execute the task with precision.

Hell

o. I can help you answer do you sand textured walls before painting or not. In general, I wouldn’t suggest sanding textured walls before painting as I did this mistake a month ago. The reason behind this is that sanding can be difficult to do evenly.

Further, there are chances that textures get removed while sanding, leading to a flat patch, distinct from the rest of the wall. I have some more additions to this, which I am sharing with you below.

Do I Need to Sand Textured Walls Before Painting?

Like I said above, you don’t need to sand the textured walls. But, in case there are any areas with imperfections like holes and cracks, you can sand those areas gently before you pick up the paintbrush.

You have to be careful while doing this though. I recommend using a putty knife and spacking. Don’t go too far while fixing areas. You wouldn’t want to remove the texture from walls and have a weird-looking flat section.

This is all I have to share with you for this answer. I hope you now know whether you should be sanding textured walls or not.
