As Diwali was approaching, I decided to do some whitewash over my walls as a part of the Diwali cleaning and preparation. But I started thinking if I can whitewash over existing paint or would that look bad. So I looked up can you whitewash over paint, and found out that not only is it possible, but it can actually bring really good results.
Can I Whitewash Over Paint?
I started by gathering my materials, which included some lint-free rags, water, white latex paint, and a paintbrush.
To start, I made a thin wash by combining the white paint and water in a 1:1 ratio. This consistency adds a light, airy gloss. To understand how the combination would react with the painted surface, I tried it on a little area on my wall beforehand.
After this, I used a brush to apply the mixture in small parts. The secret was to use a damp cloth to remove any extra paint right away. In addition to helping in getting the required transparency, this step stopped any streaks from appearing. I found that working quickly was important since the whitewash dries fast.
After the first coat dried, I could easily apply a second layer if I wanted a more opaque finish. The ability to save time and create an interesting layered effect is one benefit of whitewashing over paint.
