The main concern is whether the old wallpaper provides a smooth and stable surface for the new layer to adhere properly. If done incorrectly, you can experience issues like visible seams, peeling, or bubbling that compromise the overall durability and finish of your walls. So, can you wallpaper over wallpaper? Although it is theoretically feasible, it is usually not advised to wallpaper over current wallpaper.
Can I Wallpaper Over Wallpaper?
Adhesion Problems: New adhesive may not adhere to old wallpaper glue as well.
Surface imperfections: Damage or textures from the previous layer may be visible.
Increased Thickness: Having several layers makes removal more challenging in the future.
Preparation Required: If necessary, make sure the current wallpaper is dry, clean, and firmly attached.
It's always recommended to get rid of the old wallpaper first. This guarantees a flawless, long-lasting gloss and a smoother surface for your new wallpaper application.

A few months ago, I was surfing through the internet when I found a wallpaper I really liked. But I didn’t want to take off my previous wallpaper, because that would be too much work and the previous wallpaper was in a good enough condition. But I wasn’t sure whether can you wallpaper over wallpaper. So, I decided to do some research online. After going through various videos and articles, I was finally able to find out ways to apply wallpaper over wallpaper.
Can I Wallpaper Over Wallpaper?
It might be suitable to wallpaper over if the previous wallpaper is in good condition, adheres nicely to the wall, and doesn't have any peeling edges or bubbles. However, if the previous wallpaper is damaged or peeling, to provide a smooth surface for the new wallpaper, it is essential to remove it completely before applying the new one.
I looked at the existing wallpaper first. It had a neutral pattern and was in a good condition since there was no bubbling or peeling. Ensuring this is important because it wouldn't clash with your new design if these factors are there. Then I cleaned the surface properly to improve the new wallpaper’s adherence and removed any stains or dirt.
I then used a primer that was made especially for wallpapering over the precious wallpaper. Because it improves the bond between the old and new layers, this step was very important. I evenly applied the primer to the entire surface with a paint roller, and then I let it dry fully.
Measured and cut my new wallpaper into manageable lengths after the primer dried. My experience applying wallpaper over wallpaper was simple- I carefully placed each strip on the wall after applying wallpaper paste to the back of it.
I was careful to match the designs as closely as possible and to smooth out any air bubbles as I worked. Although it took some time, my room looked beautiful after I was done, and I couldn’t really see that the new wallpaper was put over the old one.
So wallpapering over wallpaper didn’t really turn out to be a bad idea. I loved the outcome, and the new design didn’t look too heavy. The only thing to keep in mind is that the existing wallpaper is in a good enough condition to work with.
