When I was planning to renovate my kitchen, one question came to mind: can you varnish kitchen worktops? I really like the glossy finish, but since my worktop is wooden, I wanted to be sure. After checking online, I found that varnish can be used in some cases, but it’s generally not recommended for kitchens with wooden countertops. It may not handle heat and moisture well, which are common in Indian kitchens.

Should I Varnish or Oil My Kitchen Worktop?

  1. Varnish on timber creates a hard, plastic-like layer, but it's not very strong. It can get scratched by knives or cracked if something heavy falls on it.

  2. It also doesn’t handle heat well. If the varnish gets damaged, water can seep in and cause stains or light patches on the wood.

  3. Also, maintaining varnished wood is not easy. You have to strip off the entire finish and redo it, which is a messy and time-consuming job.

  4. On the other hand, oiled worktops are much easier to care for. You can just sand them lightly and reapply oil to keep the wood looking fresh and protected.

So although varnishing kitchen worktops can provide a shine on the surface, it may not be very durable in a kitchen with wooden countertop. As it can scratch easily and doesn’t handle heat or moisture well, making maintenance more difficult over time.
