To answer your question: can you put paneling over drywall? Let me tell you that indeed, it is possible to install paneling over drywall; in fact, it is usual practice to do so in order to improve a room\'s appearance and occasionally even its soundproofing. So from my experience of installing panel over drywall, I can say that it’s best to hire a professional to handle this job with precision.

Can You Put Wood Paneling Over Drywall?

Yes you can. However, you may also need to factor in additional wall thickness, depending on the type of paneling you select. Additionally, make sure the paneling is firmly fastened to the drywall studs using the proper screws or nails. Although the steps should be carried by a professional, I am mentioning here the basic steps that are required to install wood panel over drywall,

  1. Outlets, wall plates, crown moldings, baseboards, hooks, and nails should all be removed. Using a damp towel, wipe off the walls. For a smooth surface, sand any rough spots.

  2. A grid of furring strips can be used to smooth out uneven walls.

  3. Measure one panel sheet\'s area. Determine the required number of panels by taking measurements of the wall.

  4. Track down studs with a stud finder and pencil mark their locations. A level should be used to draw straight vertical lines from floor to ceiling.

  5. Place the first panel, without any glue, in a corner. The panel edge should be straight, therefore use a level.

  6. Trim panels as necessary for fit or alignment. Accurately cut out outlets and electrical boxes with a jigsaw.

  7. Panels should be numbered and arranged before attaching. Using a caulk gun, apply adhesive in waves, then press panels into position.

  8. Use finishing nails to secure panels, then continue until all walls are covered.

  9. Apply caulk to any gaps. Apply the colour of your choice to the panels.

Hope these steps help!
