A month ago, I asked the painter I hired for our house, can I paint oil based paint over water based paint. He said yes, in most cases, oil-based paint can be applied over water-based paint. However, for an effective and long-lasting finish, adequate surface preparation is essential. Making sure the water-based paint is dry and cured before using the oil-based paint is an essential step. I have shared the process, he informed me below.

Can I Paint Oil Based Over Water Based?

Yes. This technique outperforms the alternative: applying a water-based paint over an oil-based coating. The painter said, this is usual when using primers to prepare a wall, cabinet doors, or trim for the last coat of paint.

  • It is the biggest concern when combining solvents since it will either not adhere or will attach but crack and craze with time.

  • To paint oil-based over water-based paint, sand the surface, clean it, apply a bonding primer, and apply high-quality oil-based paint. To get the detailed process, check out the steps shared by Sima here.

I finally asked him to do the oil-based paint over the water-based one.

Yes, you can put water-based paint over oil-based paint, but it requires proper preparation. You need to sand the glossy surface first and apply a good primer to make sure that the paint sticks well. Without these steps, the paint may peel or chip over time. I hope this answers your query: can I put water based paint over oil based paint. You can learn about the painting process next.

Can You Apply Oil Based Paint over Water Based Paint?

Yes, you can paint water-based paint over oil-based paint, but it requires proper preparation to ensure a successful finish.

  • Sand the Surface: The first step is to sand the glossy surface of the oil-based paint with fine-grit sandpaper. This will help you to create a rough texture and let the actual paint stick properly on the surface.

  • Clean the dust: To make sure the surface is clean, clean the surface. You can dab a clean cloth in water and wipe the surface. If needed, use some cleaning solution. This step will help the water-based paint adhere properly.

  • Apply the Primary Coat: Next you will need to apply a primer to the surface. If needed, you can apply two coats of primer.

  • Let the Coats Dry: After priming, let the surface dry for at least 3 hours and apply a coat of main paint. If you feel like applying another coat, you can go for it.

So this is how can you put oil based paint over water based. It is a tricky job; hence, I will suggest you seek an expert’s aid. So take your call and proceed.

Painting your house with an oil-based colour can make everything look glossy and bright. But using oil-paints on walls isn't the best decision. Oil based paint takes so much time to dry! And after a while, it starts flaking away from the wall. Just in case you live in a house that gets damp then you should never use oil-based paint. The paint will wear off in no time which ultimately damages the beauty of the wall. So, choosing oil based paint over water based is not an adequate option.

Can you put oil based paint over water based paint?

I have done this before, and I am here to share what stupid mistake I have made. If you are thinking of using oil-based paint over water based paint I will suggest you put a primer first. I have applied latex paint (water based) over oil based paint. Firstly it took a lot of time to dry and secondly after a month. Latex paint is flexible and oil paints are brittle. So, the paint started to come off. I wasted both my money and my effort!

I would like to point out that water and oil can never mix together. So after that, paint dries up and starts cracking or peeling off into rubbery substances. The paint begins to separate away since the particles cannot bond together.

This is all I need to share about oil based paint vs water based paint.
