Summary
A Power of Attorney (POA) format includes the principal’s and attorney’s details, a clear statement of authority, and specific powers granted. It must be dated, signed, and witnessed by two people. Clearly state if it’s a general or special POA and ensure proper notarization for legal validity.

A property power of attorney is a legal document that gives someone (the agent) the right to act on behalf of another person (the principal) in financial and property-related matters. The title, a statement from the principal designating an agent, a section outlining the agent's authority, and signature blocks for both parties are usually included in a power of attorney format. I have shared the format below.

Key Components of a POA Format

The following is the generic Power of Attorney letter template you should follow in India (works for most POA types).

  • Title

Clearly indicate the document's objective, such as "General Power of Attorney" or "Power of Attorney to Present Document for Registration," at the top.

  • Date and Place

Write clearly and concisely the date and location where the POA must be executed.

For example

, this Power of Attorney is executed on November 20, 2025, in Bangalore.

  • Principal Details (Person giving authority)

The principal indicates who is giving the authority. Do add the following details:

  • Full name of principal,

  • Age,

  • The name of his/her mother or father,

  • Residential address, and

Apart from this, it will be optional but useful if you add an identification number (Aadhaar or PAN number).

Ex:

“I, Venkateshwar R, aged about 36 years, S/o Naluuswamy R, residing at… hereby appoint…”

  • Attorney or Agent Details (Person receiving authority)

It identifies the individual who will represent the principal on his behalf. Add the following details of the attorney:

  • Full name,

  • Age,

  • Address,

  • Relation with principal, and

  • ID number (optional)

 Ex:

"hereby appoint [Attorney's Full Name], residing at...".

  • Authority Grant

An unambiguous declaration that gives an individual the power to act.

  • Scope of Powers

You must include a thorough explanation of the attorney's powers in the POA form. It can be connected to financial management, real estate transactions, document signing, and other associated operations. The principal has the option to give the agent extensive authority or restrict it to specific tasks or choices. But clearly mention the scope in the Power of Attorney form.

  • Restrictions (If Any)

Add the restrictions only if necessary. Like:

  • POA is only valid for a single transaction.

  • Unable to sell property.

  • Can not borrow money.

If you want to give authority to your agent for a single work, then clearly mention the restrictions.

  • Power Duration

The duration of the agent's authority should be specified in the document. It might be open-ended, lasting until the principal revokes it, or it can have a set duration, like six months or a year. A durable PoA must clearly specify that the agent's power endures in the case of the principal's incapacitation.

  • Legal Statement

A clause declaring that the agent's actions are just as legitimate and legally binding as those of the principal.

  • Signatures

The PoA document needs to be signed by both the principal and the attorney. To verify the document's legitimacy, several jurisdictions also want witnesses to be present and sign it.

  • Notarization or Registration

The document may require notarization by a notary public or attestation by a consular officer, depending on the type of POA. Like:

  • For General POA: Notary is sufficient

  • For NRI POA: The Indian Embassy or Consulate must attest this.

This is the general POA template. You can also download the sample from the link below.
