Yes. You can paint teak wood, but it needs careful preparation. Almost 10 months ago, I had the same query, can we paint teak wood? Then I asked the painter whom I hired for painting my entire house, including my teak wood furniture and doors. He said if it is old furniture, he can paint the teak wood. I have shared the reason behind this below.

Can I Paint Teak Wood?

Yes, but that needs to be done with proper preparation. The painter said it is because the natural oils on teak wood can prevent paint from adhering. However, he also added painting your new teak wood furniture is not something we would advise.

Here are the reasons he informed me and which you should also know.

  • Paint not only obscures the inherent beauty of teak, but water will eventually seep through the finish and cause it to peel, crack, or flake.

  • Because teak naturally contains a lot of oil, paint and other finishes have a hard time sticking to the wood.

  • He further added that if you still want to paint your new teak furniture, leave it for 6 to 8 weeks to bring out the natural oils.

  • He will then prime the wood with aluminum oxide, ensuring proper preparation and then start with the painting process.

As I had both old and rarely used teak wood furniture, I asked him to paint the old one only. To know the steps of how can you paint teak wood; read this:
