Last month, I thought about giving my old cabinets a fresh look by painting them. Since they were thermofoil cabinets, I wasn’t sure if that was possible. So I checked online to see can thermofoil cabinets be painted, and the good news is, yes, they can. I was happy to find out that even if your cabinets are not made of wood, you can still give them a new look with paint.

How to Paint Thermofoil Cabinets?

  1. Start by taking off all the doors, drawers, and hardware.

  2. Clean every corner with a degreaser, then lightly sand the surface so the primer can stick.

  3. Fix any peeling edges before you begin.

  4. You can use a bonding primer made for smooth surfaces and follow it with a good-quality acrylic cabinet paint.

  5. Apply thin coats, sanding lightly in between, and let each coat dry properly.

  6. Once the paint is fully dry, you can put the hardware back.

  7. For extra protection, you can add a clear water-based topcoat so your cabinets stay fresh longer.

After going through the steps, I realised that painting thermofoil cabinets is not a complete DIY job. So, for the best results, it’s better to hire a professional to do the painting. Hope this helps!
