Seven months ago, my brother moved to a new apartment in Chennai during the summer. Usually, this area in Chennai gets hot during the summer. The first month was fine, but after that, the water supply decreased. He called me and asked can society management curtail water supply. I informed him, it’s not allowed to do so, but in certain circumstances, they can curtail the supply of water.
Can Housing Society Cut Water Supply?
The same question my brother asked me. He asked because I was the one who was a member of the society club when I stayed there and had suggested that location. I told him it\'s illegal for society members to cut off water or power, even if dues are unpaid.
The society may not cut off the water supply to the owner or tenant if dues are unpaid. However, the society can take legal steps to recover the dues, and they can even file a court case if needed.
Because of water scarcity, the society must ask residents to use water carefully during the summer. Living in the city means you will probably face water scarcity, so to avoid such situations, they may advise you to use water minimally. However, they do not have the right to cut off the water supply, as water is a basic amenity.
Sometimes, because of maintenance issues like pipe leaks or damaged water connections, the housing society may need to cut off the water supply for a few hours. Before doing so, they should inform you in advance so that you can make the arrangements.
I hope you found this helpful.
