I started a DIY project using plywood to give it a rich, wooden look to match my home decor. But I had a doubt, can plywood be stained? After research, I found that it can. Both oil-based and water-based stains work well for plywood, though oil-based is better for outdoor projects. Let me explain the process so you can get a better idea of it.

How Do You Prepare Plywood for Staining?

  1. Take 180-grit sandpaper and gently sand the plywood surface. This helps smooth out any rough spots without damaging the thin top layer of the plywood.

  2. Next, check for cracks or small holes and fill them with wood filler.

  3. Let the filler dry, and sand those areas again to make everything even.

  4. Wipe the whole surface with a clean, damp cloth to remove all dust before starting to stain.

  5. By preparing the plywood carefully like this, you ensure the stain goes on evenly and looks smooth and professional.

As I found the process tough for me, I planned to hire a professional painter to do the job. I hope this helps you.
