Hi, Being a property advocate, I have often dealt with questions like: Can NRI owners be part of the society committee? As per my knowledge, an NRI can join a society as a member, serve on a committee, or fill the positions of chairman, secretary, or treasurer. Nothing in the Cooperative Societies Act or the Byelaws prevents an NRI, PIO, or OCI cardholder from serving on a committee or as chairman, secretary, or treasurer.
Now that you know that an NRI can be a part of society committee, let me tell you, who can become a member of society as per byelaws:
Anyone who owns a flat, apartment, office, store, or plot within the society's work area is qualified to join.
An individual who has committed in writing to abide by all of the society's rules and regulations.
An individual who has submitted a formal application and been accepted by the managing committee is listed in Annexure "B" of the membership.
Someone who has paid the Rs. 5 admission fee.
Someone who has paid for the share money and subscribed for at least five shares.
Hope this helps you!
