When some electrical work was going on in my house, I asked my electrician, “Can I change light switch without turning off power?” He immediately said, “No, you can’t.” He explained that one should always turn off the power at the breaker box before starting any work on a switch. Also, it is best to use a voltage tester to make sure the power is really off. At the breaker box, just switch off the breaker for the circuit that controls the switch.

How to Change Light Switch Without Turning Off Power?

Like I mentioned above, you can’t change a light switch without turning off the power.

  1. My electrician told me, first turn off the power to the switch at the main breaker and maybe put some tape on it so no one switches it on by mistake. He said to check if the power is really off by flipping the switch.

  2. Then he told me to remove the wall plate carefully and look at the wires. Black wires go to black screws, white to neutral, and green or copper to ground. If the wires are push-in type, just release them with a screwdriver.

  3. After that, connect the new switch the same way, screw it back in, test it by turning the breaker on, and if everything works, turn the breaker off again, put the plate back, and switch the power on. Done!

These are the points my electrician shared with me. I hope this gives you a clear idea.
