Last month, I received a cheque from my tenant. However, it was issued by a different bank from the one where I hold an account. I was unsure can a different bank cheque be withdrawn at another bank. So I asked my bank manager, and he said no. You cannot simply go into another bank and withdraw cash against a separate bank's cheque.
Is It Possible to Withdraw a Different Bank Cheque at Another Bank?
It is not possible to withdraw a check from Bank A to Bank B over the counter. For example, you can visit any SBI branch and take out cash if you have an SBI cheque (as long as you have the right ID proof). The reason for this is that the bank network is the same.
Suppose you attempt to cash an HDFC Bank cheque at ICICI Bank. You won't get cash from ICICI immediately.
You will be required to deposit the cheque for collection into your HDFC Bank account if you have one.
The cheque will then be sent to ICICI Bank for collection by HDFC Bank.
After receiving the cheque, ICICI Bank will validate it and confirm that the issuer's account has sufficient funds.
ICICI Bank will debit the cheque issuer's account and transfer the funds to HDFC Bank if the cheque is legitimate and there is a sufficient balance.
The cheque amount will subsequently be credited (deposited) to your Bank B account. After that, you can take the funds out of your HDFC Bank account.
