As a banking employee, I can tell you are regional rural banks nationalised or not. Nationalized banks are not Regional Rural Banks or RRBs. According to the Regional Rural Banks Act of 1976, RRBs are scheduled commercial banks in India that were established to serve rural areas and underprivileged people. I have shared more details on it below.

Is Regional Rural Bank a Nationalised Bank?

No. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) oversee the operations of RRBs.

  1. They are government-owned even though they haven't been nationalized.

  2. The Central Government owns 50% of the shares, followed by the sponsoring public sector bank (35%), and the relevant State Government (15%).

Key Differences between RRBs and Nationalised Banks

  1. RRBs were founded as public-sector banks. However, nationalized banks were private financial institutions that had been taken over by the Indian Government.

  2. RRB operations are limited to specified districts or regions. However, nationalized banks operate nationwide and have an international presence.
