I know nowadays aesthetics take center stage in bathroom design. However, safety is an important consideration you should never disregard. For my new bathroom, the professional informed me they will install ceramic tiles. As I don’t want to take risks, I asked them, are ceramic tiles slippery when wet. He said yes, wet ceramic tiles, especially tiles with a glossy, smooth surface, are slippery.

Are Ceramic Tiles Inherently Slippery?

The gloss level of the ceramic tiles you have selected will determine this. Their water resistance is dependent on the glaze and finish used, even though they can be made with textured finishes to prevent slippage.

  1. For instance, high gloss tiles are more likely to get slippery when wet. This is because the tile's surface layer forms a glossy coating, and it prevents liquid or debris from absorbing into it.

  2. Because low-gloss and matte tiles typically have a rough surface that offers some traction when wet, they are less likely to slip.

Therefore, it's crucial to choose textured or matte ceramic tiles for bathroom safety. So, I asked the designer to install textured ceramic tiles in my bathroom.
