In a move that offers major relief to thousands of homebuyers, the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA) has directed the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) to formally register its long delayed housing layout under the Real Estate (Regulation and Development ) Act, 2016.
The directive comes after repeated complaints from buyers who had paid for plots in BDA- developed layouts but were waiting for years without possession or clarity on timelines. RERA’s intervention aims to ensure that the BDA follows the same transparency and accountability standards as private builders.
Once the layout is registered the BDA will be required to provide key details – including approved layout plan, development progress, completion schedules and financial disclosures on the RERA portal. This will allow buyers to track updates and safeguard their rights under the law.
Homebuyers groups have welcomed the decision, saying it marks a big step towards improving public trust in government-led housing projects. Experts believe the order also sets a precedent for other state development authorities that have faced criticism in project delays and lack of information sharing.
Officials from the BDA have stated that they are working on completing the registration process and addressing compliance requirements as soon as possible.
