The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Pallike (BBMP) easy division recently carried out a major inspection drive and identified 165 unlicensed paying guest (PG) accommodations operating without the required trade license in its area limits. The drive covered inspections across all wards in the east city limits and revealed that out of around 1,452 PGs operating, a significant number lacked the mandatory permission and safety standards.
These finds prompted the civic body to issue a seven-day ultimatum for all unidentified PG operators. They must either obtain the license or compile with safety and hygiene norms including fire safety, CCTV installation, and proper zoning by Nov 5,2025 or face penalties and possible closure.
The crackdown comes amid growing complaints from locals, especially in residential zones near the IT corridor where PGs without supervision and proper record were reportedly causing disturbance and safety concerns. Officials noted issues such as mixed- gender occupancies, late night noise, and general misuse of residential properties for commercial lodging.
In addition to the enforcement, the civic bodies are planning to introduce a new PG Certification System.
Under this plan only PGs that pass an inspection of hygiene,safety, infrastructure and zoning will receive a certificate confirming their legitimacy. Certified PGs will carry a badge of approval to help tenants recognise safety accommodation and operators who comply who benefit from official recognition.
For residents and students, this move promises better oversight of PG accommodations and safer living spaces. For PG business operators, it underscores the importance of being compliant, transparent, and properly documented.
