I bought a property in haldwani (Uttarakhand) and the registry under my name. We broke a Fixed deposit from my wife’s account and sent it to my brother in the city where I bought the property. The amount transferred from my wife’s account was 45 lakhs and my brother paid 14 lakhs to the seller and the rest was paid in small cheques to the seller upon his demands. The bank deducted 1.5 lakhs from my brother’s account saying that it was due to transactions made from his account. He is retired. The accountant didn’t clarify properly but mentioned that my brother will have to pay 30% i.e. 13 lakhs to ITR when they will send a notice of assessment. I’m very confused because we did everything fairly and the amount is high to pay for no reasons. Could you please suggest ? TIA
