Vastu Position of Living & Vastu for Dining Areas

As per the Vasthu principles, for a naalukettu (a combination of 4 houses – one each on each side of inner courtyard connected with passages on the corner portions as per Vasthu), its northern wing (vadikkini) is called annalayam (aalayam for preparing and having food) and its eastern wing (kizhakkini) is called sukhalayam (resting and refreshment).

According to the above-mentioned concept, works related to preparing, serving & having food is to be in the northern wing of the house. Thus, the kitchen, work area, dining, pantry and all similar workspaces are to be planned along the northern wing of the house on a general basis.

For kitchen, a detailed explanation of its location was mentioned in this blog. So, this very principle states that the dining area to be located in the northern wing of the house. Also, the above-mentioned concept says that Kizhakkini (Eastern wing) is sukhalayam. Hence, all workspaces where we take rest and where we do refreshment activities are to be positioned in the eastern wing. These spaces include living room, family living room, drawing room etc. Also, refreshment includes all the works that are done for mental/physical stimulation viz. meditation room, pooja room etc. Hence, the eastern wing of the house is the auspicious position for all works related to resting and refreshment.

Vasthu principles also state that the activities in the eastern and northern wings may be interchanged. Hence eastern and northern wings are the auspicious positions for family living and dining rooms.

Size of Living/Dining

We can visualize the shape of a house and its internal spaces only with its dimensions. Hence dimensions are given prior importance in Vasthu. Every space in a house needs to be sized in such a way that it complies with the Vasthu standards. Hence, the living and the dining space too has to be sized in such a way that it falls into the specified set of Vasthu dimensions. Vasthu has got its a unique system of dimensioning standards. The perimeter of space/house is the key determining factor of dimension in Vasthu. A room/house is sized in such a way that its perimeter complies with the auspicious set of dimensions in vasthu. The auspicious dimension for a particular house/room is fixed based on “Shadvargangal”( aayam, vyayam, nakshathram, thidhi, vayassu and karanam). The perimeter which gives the most auspicious combinations of this shadvargangal should only be adopted.

Common queries Decorating a living room is a major concern for many people. Vasthu principle states the themes of room décor/paintings for living room to be planned in such a way that they look calm & serene.  Also, people have a common doubt on whether the pooja/madir can be planned inside the living room. Vasthu principle states that auspicious location for pooja room/madir is in the northern/eastern wing of the house. Hence, if the living room is in the northern/eastern wing and if the pooja room is placed inside the living room in such a way that pooja room still is in the northern/eastern wing of the house, then the location of pooja room inside living room is auspicious as per vasthu.
