Now, this water is managed by the water department, they lay pies, create reservoir, etc. so that there is enough water for each of our homes. The Types of Water Meters

It is important to find the right water meter, one that helps with

“Charging consumers based on the actual quantity of water consumed by each consumer.”

– FCRI India

Water meters make measurements based on a rotor. Water flows through the meter and it drives a rotor. The number of the performed turns by the rotor is proportional with the passed volume of the water.

With the use of a magnetic clutch the shaft of the rotor and the counter can be synchronized without any opening in the body of the meter, hence it is insulated from the water and it is called a dry running meter. When the counter and rotor are not insulated, it is called a wet running meter.

Water meters can be classified as horizontally mounted meters and vertically built-in meters. Water meters are also classified as per their ability to give accurate readings, and are labelled as class A, B and C meters. Class A meters can measure higher flow rates and Class B meters have the ability to measure very low flow rates, compared to class A meters.

Different Types of Water Meters

Water meters are devices used to measure the volume of water passing through a specific point in a water supply system. They are essential for utility companies, businesses, and households to accurately bill for water consumption. Different types of water meters exist, each serving specific purposes. Here are some of the most common types:

1. Water Flow Meter

A water flow meter is a general term for any meter that measures the flow rate of water. These meters typically use mechanical or electronic mechanisms to measure the amount of water passing through a pipe over a given time. The flow rate is usually expressed in gallons per minute (GPM) or cubic meters per hour (m³/h).

2. Digital Water Meter

A digital water meter is an electronic water meter that uses advanced technology to measure water flow. These meters often have digital displays, making it easier to read and monitor water usage. Digital water meters may also have additional features like data logging, wireless communication, and remote monitoring capabilities.

3. Water Pressure Meter

Water pressure meters are designed to measure the pressure of the water in a pipeline. While not directly measuring water consumption, they are crucial for understanding the system’s overall performance and efficiency.

4. Water TDS Meter

Unlike the previous meters, a water TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter measures the concentration of dissolved solids in the water. It gives an indication of water quality by measuring the total amount of inorganic and organic substances dissolved in water, such as salts, minerals, and metals.

5. Water Submeter

A water submeter is a meter installed downstream from the main water meter and is typically used in multi-unit residential or commercial buildings. It allows individual measurement of water consumption for each unit, helping property owners or managers accurately bill tenants based on their specific usage.

6. Residential Water Meter

Residential water meters are specifically designed for use in single-family homes or small apartments. These meters are typically installed at the point where the water service enters the property and are used to measure the overall water consumption of the household.

Each type of water meter serves a different purpose and provides valuable data for various applications. Whether it’s measuring water flow, pressure, quality, or submetering, these devices play a critical role in managing and conserving water resources effectively.

Why do we Need Water Meters?

Water meters are a huge necessity, no matter where in the world you live. A meter helps you keep tabs of how much water you’re using, how much you’re paying for your water, is your water actually reaching you, and it also encourages water conservation.

It Reduces Misuse of Water

In a study done by a group of apartments in Baroda and Mumbai, water meters were attached to each individual house (as opposed to just 1 meter for the building). They found that this led to a reduction in the use of water by about 40%!

Leakage alerts

If there is a leak in any of your water pipes, your water meter reader will be able to alert you of this. If there is a leak in your supply pipe, water will flow continuously through the meter, hence you will be able to spot this and take quick action. You will also be able to stop the damage that water leaks cause.
